THE BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY GARDENS
Community Gardens are the heart of any public space that houses them. People, especially children, are drawn to them like a magnet. They become a gathering place that increases health for the body and the neighborhood that houses them.
Some of the data driven benefits of community gardens?
Increased health- lower BMI, lower levels of stress and tension, higher self-esteem, more physical activity, access to organic food,
Job and life skills- culinary skills, run a business, grow food, learning medicinal herbs, how to construct things, how to use tools, train to sell at farmers markets, how to teach classes.
Environmental skills- reduce chemical use, create more comfortable urban microclimates, water conservation and purification, reduce waste through composting, improves air and soil quality, create safe pollinator spaces,
Evidence that gardens often lead to decreased crime levels, increase sense of community and cooperation.
Green spaces beautify ugly, abandoned lots.
Increased community building by providing a place for people of different backgrounds to come together. Also provides opportunity to network and build trusting relationships between different partners.
…and so much more that cannot be measured by datasets.
