WHAT ARE VICTORY GARDENS?
During the World Wars of the early last century, our government created a national campaign of Victory Gardens to encourage us to grow our own food, thus ensuring that the food grown on larger farms could go to feed our troops.
The government mobilized and put huge resources into supporting and encouraging everyone to grow gardens in backyards, front yards, churches, businesses and community spaces. They created art to celebrate and inspire us all to see it as our civil duty to be self-sufficient.
The result? Through this nationwide effort to become more food secure, 42% of our vegetables and fruits were grown in Victory Gardens. FORTY-TWO percent! Today local food, including gardens, only supplies about 2%.
WE CAN DO IT AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME FOR LOVE AND COMMUNITY.
VICTORY GARDENS and FARMS 2.0
In the 21st century, it’s clear our government has different priorities. This century’s generation has come to see that we cannot wait for D.C. to fix things for us or the planet.
This century is about us coming together independent of government. It’s about us to uniting across party lines, the country and globe to create a nation overflowing with Victory Gardens again. But this time, we will mobilize ourselves and grow food for love of our families, our communities, our country and our planet!
We have been inspired by an amazing program in Milwaukee called the Victory Garden Initiative. They started in 2009 as a group of friends came together and planted 35 raised bed box gardens in the greater Milwaukee area. They called it The Greater Milwaukee Victory Garden Blitz.
Since then they have installed close to 5000 gardens. Aside from the Blitz they operate a teaching Urban Farm, plant tons of fruit trees, are in the process of creating a community center and have created a successful dream model that any community can replicate.
We reached out to them and asked if we could join them to amplify what they are doing and were delighted they accepted us into their fold. They have been most supportive in mentoring us and we are proud to be one of the sproutlings of what we hope will be a national Victory Garden Initiative with Blitzes every Spring in every town in every land across the globe.
BUTTE COUNTY’S VICTORY GARDEN BOX AND BUCKET BLITZ
We are really excited to announce our first Blitz will be Spring 2020!!
How does it work?
- You fill out an application after October 1st for one or more boxes or buckets
- We come out and help you decide where to put it (if needed)
- We install the box and fill it with soil, give you a few plant starts, then come out to mentor you a few times to make sure you have support in growing an abundant harvest with your new green thumb
- You harvest tasty food all year round as you find the joys of picking your meal right before you cook it
Our first Blitz will start with 50 boxes and 150 buckets (for those impacted by the Camp Fire or who simply don’t have the space for a garden box). We’ll do at least another 50/150 in the Fall, but focus on Paradise as we figure the water situation will be more stable then.
Join our infrequent email list to get our announcement closer to the date and to keep up with all our other great events and adventures.
We’ll need tons of volunteers to do the installations. Sign up to become part of this amazing project here.
Donate to the project and/or a box for a low income gardener.
