Our Vision for Butte County is to create a strong local food system as the basis of a strong local economy,
anchored in a healthy community that thrives on neighbors helping neighbors.

OBJECTIVES

LOCAL AND REGIONAL FOOD

  • Butte county moves to 10% local food by 2025

  • 2500 gardens by 2025

  • Increase food security

  • Support our Local Farmers

  • Increase Farmers Market sales by 10% by 2021

  • Increase CSA memberships by 10% by 2021

  • Promote Farm, Nursery and Urban Garden Tours

  • Create a network of support and mentorship for gardeners

HOW DOES IT BENEFIT BUTTE COUNTY AND THE NORTH STATE?

  • Stimulates local economies. For every $1M in local food, 13 jobs are created. Those who don’t feed local communities create 3 jobs.

  • Returns 3 times the money back into the local economy as chain retailers

  • Is healthier because it’s fresher

  • When grown regeneratively, has a lower carbon footprint, can save water and helps the environment.

  • Strengthens connection in our divided communities via personal, community and school gardens; urban farms, CSAs, and farmers markets

  • Preserves rural farmland and livelihoods

In 2015, Vermont made a commitment to prioritize economic development of local food and created The Vermont Farm To Plate initiative. They identified and mobilized a variety of stakeholders to work together on all aspects of the food system. With a population roughly 3 times that of Butte County, it is now the state with the highest percentage of local food consumption in the U.S. Their initial goal was to raise the amount of local food consumed from 5% to 10% by 2020. Even with their short growing season, they surpassed that goal and made it to 12.9% in 2018.

If Vermont can have this much success with just one growing season, imagine what we can do here as we can basically grow year-round.
