Save Those Seeds!

Greetings –

We hope this finds you breathing a bit better after the orange sky situation of a few weeks back. Our hearts go out to all who have been impacted. We pray that all will be under control soon and that it’ll be the end of an early fire season.

Save Those Seeds!

Our highlight this email is to remind you of how important and fun it is to save seeds!  To make that easier, we invite you to a Zoom Webinar featuring Sherri Scott from GRUB Grown Nursery. It’ll be Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 6PM. Join us via Zoom.

Sherri will talk about both dry and wet forms of seed saving and will help you figure out how to save seed that produce plants true to variety but not get too far into the genetics of a professional seed saver. Be sure to make it and bring your questions because Sherri is ready for them. Find out a bit more about this great opportunity here.

Have some time to help package and/or deliver seed packets to Tiny Libraries and porches? (All COVID safe ways to volunteer).  Pamm broke her patella and needs help to make sure we get those seeds out there. Email me back.

On The Road With The Butte County Local Food Network

Our first interview in over a year is with Cascade Valley Heritage Farm. Check out our new YouTube Channel and watch it grow as we interview farmers, restauranteurs, gardeners, policy folks, ranchers, home canners and just about anyone who has anything to do with local food. We encourage you to submit your own videos via email at pamm@bclocalfood.org and/or contact us to be on our new video team. You’ll get to build your portfolio and hone your skills by being mentored by Dan Carter, video Professor at CSUC!

Priya and Mike invited us out to their farm last month to meet their heritage chickens, ducks, goats and pigs. Follow them on Facebook to hear when they have eggs for sale. You’ll love hearing the story of this amazing young couple who are committed to their animals and protecting heritage breeds.

In the meantime, watch this first of three short videos and learn all about why they do what they do and how to start if you want to do it, too.

Other Announcements and Events

Kentfield Garden Needs TLC- Jenny and the crew at From the Ground UP have been both personally and professionally impacted by the fires and COVID. They have been focusing on food deliveries, getting grants and permits and generally doing their loving-the-community thing they do. As a result, the garden needs some help from the community. Please contact them via Facebook or email them at fromthegroundup2013@hotmail.com and help out. It doesn’t take much and feels good to support your community… and you can bring some great produce home with you, too.

Sweep Out The Broom And Urban Gardening Workshop – Paradise Community Guilds, Camp Fire Restoration Project and Butte County Local Food Network are joining forces to offer a workshop and work day at the Paradise Community Guilds grounds. Want some chickens? A dear friend and ally is moving from Gridley to Placerville and has a flock of chickens. She needs them gone this Friday (she’ll be back in town then).  If you can make it there, please reply to this email and let us know and we’ll do our best to get you some. Donations appreciated.

We are forming a Glean Team to harvest fruit from city and private property. If you want to be on an “on call” list to pick ripe and ready food for people who need it, please join us.  Just send me an email and let me know you want to be added to the list. Please include your phone number. Thanks!

Be well, Stay Safe and Keep Smiling!
