BLITZ Success and Saving Seeds

The BLITZ On The Burn Scar is officially over!  Our goal was to install 100  in 2020. With our Spring (42 gardens) and Fall (58 gardens) BLITZs we have officially met that goal.

We were amazed and overjoyed at the support in the community, given these challenging times. Thanks to all who volunteered, to the Paradise Community Guilds and From The Ground UP for their support. And thanks, again, to the North Valley Community Foundation and Butte Strong Fund for the grant which made it possible to do all the boxes as gifts.

We still have to eat and a strong local food system has never been more important than now. We will continue to do our best to create food security, with as much safety for the community as possible…

So what’s next during these Crazy Times?

Seed Saving For Beginners- Sept. 23, 6PM Zoom webinar. Sherri Scott has graciously agreed to share her extensive knowledge on how to save seeds. You can join us via Zoom, link will be sent closer to the date. Just be sure you keep that evening open as you’ll want to be sure and make this event. There is very limited, COVID distanced seating at Vecino Victory Garden.  With only 10 tickets available for the public, please be sure you’ll be there if you get a ticket. And please spread the word about with our friends on Facebook if you have an account there. Saving seeds for your and your friends’ next year crops are going to be important. There were seed shortages this year and they are anticipated for 2021.

Work Day At Vecino Victory Garden – this and every Sunday from 9am to?? Drop on by and join us as we continue to create and refine the Demonstration Permaculture Food forest we have growing. If you stop by, check out the new chicken coop donated by a wonderful member of our community who prefers to remain anonymous.   Thanks to Ali, Jarrett, Toni, Amy, Lisette and Sid for the herculean task of moving it and putting it up at its new home at Vecino and to Steve and Cheri for their help in making the move happen. So many moving pieces and parts!! We’ll share more about Vecino in the very near future, but in the meantime, come join us for COVID safe fun, community, and take home a few things from the garden!

Work Day at Paradise Community Guilds – Sunday, September 20 from 9am to 1PM. We are migrating our Vecino Work Day on the 20th and joining forces with the Guilds, and Camp Fire Restoration Camp folks to do a monster work day at the Paradise Community Guilds property. We’ll have plenty of projects for everyone and a workshop on Weed Abatement without RoundUp. Stay tuned for more on this day as we pin things down, but wanted to alert you so you can save the date as it’ll be a fun one!

Other announcements

The Butte Environmental Council will be holding their 33rd annual Stream Cleanup on two days this year- Sept. 26th and 27th. Find out more and sign up here.

Feed Butte County Direct- Concow. We are opening up our second round of recipients for this project that brings together two populations in need of support while simultaneously helping to create a strong local food system. One of the populations are folks in acute food need up in Concow. The other are two young, local farmers. If you know of anyone in the Concow/Pulga/Yankee Hill area that is in need of support for healthy food, please have them fill out this application for consideration by September 18. This project exists due to the generosity of the North Valley Community Foundation and Butte Strong Fund. Are we noticing a pattern of wonderfulness here? We are so excited these funders see the value in creating a strong local food system.

There’s lots more going on in these Crazy Times (like our new YouTube channel, and two new projects), but it’s all we will share today. Stay tuned for more adventures as we continue to create a strong local food system that can hopefully stem the tide for what could be a challenging year for the global food system.

Take care, grow food and keep smiling.

Pamm Larry
